The Research Field
The research programme IT and Law has a Legal and Technical approach.
LEGAL: The society is continually changing due to developments in IT and Internet. These developments have to be followed and analyzed in order to signal Legal bottlenecks. We can sometimes use current Legal principles to solve these bottlenecks, but often we need new norms.
TECHNICAL: Internet and IT can also be used to support Legal activities and proceedings. Applications like (digital) search engines in Legal databases and the exchange of available information from various files are among the focus of this programme’s research.
COMBINATION: Within the programme IT and Law there is a cooperation between technical experts (like information scientists) and Legal experts. The programme is unique in its knowledge of information technology and the applicability of that knowledge.
Some topics the programme deals with are: online mediation, utilizations for intelligent agents, virtual worlds and ICT in the administration of justice.
